Participants in our unique program in Philadelphia enjoy an experience that serves as an introduction to the excitement and intricacies of patent law.

At BakerHostetler, our well-rounded summer program is designed to provide students with the training, experience and confidence necessary to begin the journey to become great lawyers who will enjoy their colleagues and their work.

“As a law student looking to gain practical experience in intellectual property law, BakerHostetler's Philadelphia office was the perfect place for me to work as a summer associate. The office hosts one of the largest intellectual property practices in the area, and the attorneys collectively handle projects in everything from patent litigation to data privacy and protection. The wide breadth of intellectual property issues that the office handles, combined with the expertise of the attorneys, make BakerHostetler's Philadelphia office the ideal spot for an IP-focused law student.

Over my summer with BakerHostetler, I worked on a wide breadth of interesting projects with several attorneys. As a law student particularly interested in patent law, I researched pressing patent law issues, investigated patent office action responses, and even assisted in the drafting process of a patent application. Not to mention, I received invaluable feedback from the attorneys on these projects.  They helped identify things I did well and ways I could improve my work product.

Outside of the projects themselves, BakerHostetler has an incredible firm culture. The attorneys were highly supportive of the summer associates, and they were truly approachable whenever I had a question regarding a project or just wanted to learn about their legal practice. Moreover, they were always happy to take the summer associates out to lunch!”

Our structured 10-week summer associate program is designed to enhance the learning opportunities for our students.  We provide assignments that span every aspect of IP law, ensuring a well-rounded experience for our summer associates.  Additionally, we offer a firsthand look into the daily practices of our attorneys by including students in activities such as client meetings or calls, hearings, depositions and trials.

The Philadelphia Summer Program includes first- and second-year law students and serves as the primary avenue for recruiting entry-level associates to our office. Given the predominantly technical nature of our practice in the Philadelphia office, we encourage law students with a technical background (such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, etc.) or those holding a life science undergraduate degree coupled with an MS or Ph.D. in areas such as Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, etc., to submit their applications.

The Philadelphia office plans to hire 2 summer associates. To apply, please submit your cover letter, resume and law school transcript as well as undergraduate transcripts through our online application: BH Student Online Application.
