In July 2022, President Joe Biden nominated Philadelphia Partner John Murphy to serve as a judge with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. With overwhelming support in the Senate, he was confirmed in December.

Prior to his nomination, now-Judge Murphy spent 15 years at BakerHostetler, representing plaintiffs and defendants in district courts – great practice for the role he now holds. He also represented clients before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. International Trade Commission, the Patent Trial Appeals Board and numerous arbitration panels and mediators.

Just after Judge Murphy was nominated, Intellectual Property Practice Group Chair Mark Tidman said he was “glad to see John recognized for his sharp legal mind, extensive and broad-based experience and great leadership qualities. He is sure to make a superior district court judge.”

Judge Murphy’s investiture ceremony took place Sept. 29 at the James A. Byrne United States Courthouse in Philadelphia.
