Partner Daniel Kaufman is quoted in a July 20, 2023, National Law Journal article titled “FTC Seeks Comments on Facial Recognition Technology to Protect Preteens’ Online Privacy.”
According to the article, the Entertainment Software Rating Board seeks to convince the Federal Trade Commission to approve a facial recognition technology that estimates the age of users in a bid to ensure that a person giving consent for a child is really an adult.
(By law, companies who provide content and sell services to children under 13 must get parental consent to collect or use kids’ personal information.)
Kaufman told the publication that developing new ways to obtain parental consent is important and this proposal appears “well-grounded.” Furthermore, “I am hoping that this becomes another alternative that companies will be able to consider down the road,” he said.
